Our rescue dog programme helps dogs who need a safe, healthy start in a new home. At Heronden Vets, we believe every rescue dog deserves careful assessment, practical support and a family that understands their needs.

We work with Mike and the team at Extra Special Dog Rescue. They support dogs rescued from street life in Cyprus and help match them with suitable homes. Before rehoming, the aim is to understand each dog’s health, behaviour and day-to-day needs.

Our role is to provide veterinary checks and guidance where appropriate. This may include health assessments, preventative care advice, vaccination planning, parasite control, neutering discussions and support for any ongoing medical needs. Each dog is treated as an individual.

If you are thinking about adoption, take time to consider your home, routine, existing pets and long-term costs. Rescue dogs may need patience while they settle. Some adapt quickly. Others need more time, training and reassurance.

The rescue dog programme is also about giving adopters clear information. We can talk through common questions about settling in, insurance, diet, exercise, vaccinations and follow-up checks. This helps families prepare before a dog arrives and know when to ask for veterinary advice.

We will always encourage honest conversations before a dog is placed. A successful adoption is built on preparation, clear advice and realistic expectations. It should feel right for both the dog and the family.
